I was recently searching for some data on US wine market. So I compiled data on #of wineries, population, and production of bulk+bottled wine by each state. Then after gathering all the data, I removed state with less than 400 wineries. That resulted in 5 states – California, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.
The most surprising fact was how much wine New York is producing. It’s probably safe to assume the bulk majority may be produced from hybrid vines; however, the fact that significantly more NY wines are being bottled and not bulk produced may indicate drive towards quality.
As I indicated in an earlier blog post, New York is probably not a bad place for west coast wineries to start eyeing.
